Building a Broader Perspective: Why We Hire for Potential, Not the Playbook

Building a Broader Perspective: Why We Hire for Potential, Not the Playbook

Payments touch everyone. They cross borders, generations, cultures, and technologies. So, when working with our clients to develop the very best payment products, we know that success starts with something more fundamental than code or compliance. It starts with people.

At Accomplish, we look for more than textbook credentials like industry experience, formal qualifications, or academic achievements. Our focus is on building a team designed to think differently, challenge assumptions, and reflect the diversity of the world we operate in. We do it because that’s what creates better outcomes for our clients and for the people they serve.

But more than that, with the right blend of voices and perspectives we can build experiences that resonate in the moment, and also evolve with the changing needs, behaviours, and expectations of the people who use them.

The Qualities We Look For
If we want to deliver outstanding products, we can’t rely on standard recruitment practices. We’ve got to break the mould. That’s why we don’t hire by formula, we don’t box tick, and we don’t pigeonhole. Instead, we look for five core traits that shape how we think, how we work, and how we deliver value.

1. Emotional Intelligence
In payments, empathy is so much more than a soft skill, it’s a superpower. It enables us to step into the shoes of our clients and the end user, understand what they need and why they need it, and design services that feel seamless, even when the use case is complex. It also drives better communication, better collaboration, and better care.

2. Adaptability
In payments, nothing stands still. It is a dynamic environment where regulation continues to shift, technology advances, and customer expectations evolve. To be at our best, we look for people who embrace change, can thrive in a constantly shifting environment, and see it as an opportunity, not an obstacle.

3. Openness
Great ideas can come from anywhere, and often do. It’s why we value open minds and open dialogue. It helps us avoid echo chambers and ensures we’re solving real problems for real people, not just designing in our own image.

Openness of thought means recognising that things are different for different people. What seems obvious in one context may be irrelevant, or simply not transferrable, in another. When we hire people who bring an open mindset, we’re better able to test ideas, challenge assumptions, and build solutions that genuinely resonate with the markets they’re designed for.

4. Communication
Simplicity is everything. Our world is technically complex, but our job is to make it intuitive for the people who work with us and for those who use our products. That starts with our internal communication and being clear, timely, and audience-aware. It ends with products that are easy to understand, easy to manage, and easy to use.

5. Curiosity
When you work in payments, you’re working in an industry that never stops and that means that you’re always learning. Whether it’s understanding a new model, rethinking an old assumption, or borrowing an idea from another industry entirely, we want people who are hungry to explore, evolve, and improve.

Experience Matters. But Not in the Way You Think
We don’t believe you need a decade in payments to add value from day one. In fact, some of our most meaningful contributions come from people with fresh perspectives and different experiences. What matters most is mindset and an ability to connect to the world of payments through curiosity, learning, and empathy.

It’s why we don’t just look for people from within our industry. Sometimes the most transformative ideas come from outside it. One example we love comes from the medical world, where emergency teams improved patient handovers by borrowing techniques from Formula One pit crews. By assigning clear roles and responsibilities, they were able to reduce confusion, increase the efficiency and effectiveness of each team member and in doing so, improve outcomes.

It’s a reminder that great ideas often emerge when you apply thinking from one field to another. That’s how innovation happens, and it’s how we ensure our clients benefit from thinking that’s both sharp and human.

Why It Matters
The work we do is complex. But the experience, the solution, and the result should be seamless, clear, and intuitive. That only happens when the people building the solutions know how to distill complexity into clarity, and care enough to make every decision count for the end user. That’s why at Accomplish, we believe the best way to shape the future of payments is to build a team that reflects the world it’s meant to serve.
